It’s July as I post this blog which means this: I love iced coffee. When coffee still sounds good but you feel too hot for a mug of the read deal, a low cal iced version is the way to go!

After weight-loss surgery, you have to be cautious with caffeine. Why? Gastric Sleeve and Bypass patients are at an increased risk of dehydration after surgery. Caffeine is a diuretic which means it is dehydrating in nature which is a bad combo for someone who is a high risk for dehydration.

I’m okay with patients having 20 ounces of tea or coffee a day IF they are getting 64-96 oz of hydrating fluids a day. For more on hydration watch this video! (Premier Access Video)

That’s why I love these Decaf Starbucks® Via packets. In the afternoon when I’m ready for a little “pick me up” I can add a packet to ice water in my protein shaker cup. I shake it up big time and then add a splash of fat-free half and half or unsweetened almond milk.

I’ve also tried adding a scoop of vanilla whey protein powder. And it went great! For pre-op patients this would be a great option for breakfast or afternoon snack to make sure you don’t go too long without eating. (But protein shakes aren’t meant for everyone and most postop patients should skip adding the protein powder. This video explains more – Premier Access Video.)

Just a few minutes until you have a refreshing and decaffeinated iced coffee! No need to use hot water if you shake it well to let it dissolve :) Enjoy!
