Why post-ops have to be careful of soup

Beefy Chili Stoup is name inspired by Rachael Ray’s made up term of “stoup” (soup + chili) and one that I often use on this website.

You see, soup is not the best choice for post-op bariatric patients. I know, it’s so annoying. We always think of soup as low calorie and super enjoyable on a rainy or cold day. So what’s the issue with soup?

The texture.

The reason fluids with food is not recommended after surgery is because gastric emptying (how fast food moves through the stomach) is much faster after any weight loss surgery procedure.

To get the most out of your surgery, you want to eat foods that are dense and hearty with lean protein. While chicken and vegetables in a soup is a great idea nutritionally, you can likely eat more of it and will get hungry faster than had you eaten…chicken and vegetables on a plate.

The solution

Chili and stews have been a great answer to a thick and filling protein dense meal that has the enjoyment of soup (warm and comforting) without the extra broth and liquid.

Omit rice or potatoes and a stew will work great! (Recipes below) Or with this “stoup” you can have the flavor of chili but add in a few vegetables for texture and flavor change.
